Joe Lonie tasted success early; he directed his first music videos as a teen, while playing bass for Supergroove. Since then his 60+ music clips — four of them Tui award-winners — have included work for Bic Runga, and one-shot wonders for Goodshirt and Liam Finn. He also directed web series The Factory, and two award-winning shorts set in moving vehicles: raunchy taxi tale Honk if You're Horny, and Shout at the Ground.

Biography

Joe Lonie’s impressive run of clever, concept-driven music videos hasn’t always been a guarantee of work.

"I wasn’t making 'let’s make the band look cool' videos," says Lonie. "So it was harder for me to get jobs than you think, because I always wanted to push that envelope. Surprisingly, a lot of bands didn’t want to roll around in mud or move furniture all day."

Awards

2017 Nevada International Film Festival (United States)

“The better the song, the harder it is to come up with a good video.”
