John Barningham

Producer, Director, Executive

John Barningham was a creative force in early New Zealand television, producing music shows with stars Max Cryer, Ray Columbus, and The Chicks. He co-produced Geoff Murphy’s eclectic music and comedy series Blerta, and later worked on high profile Australian dramas The Sullivans and Sara Dane. Back in New Zealand, Barningham served as Programme Controller for TV2 before his passing in April 1987.

My job is more concerned with making sure the actors interpret their scripts accurately, so we see the attitudes of the characters rather than the actors. John Barningham on producing Australian series The Sullivans, TV Week, 8 April 1978
