Formed in 2019, Ka Hao is a tira waiata (choir) made up of 24 rangatahi from the Te Tairāwhiti (Gisborne) region. The group first featured on a collaborative album of gospel waiata, Mōhao, in 2020, which won Best Worship Album and the Mana Reo Award at the Aotearoa Music Awards. They soon gained international attention when their uplifting hit ‘35’ went viral on social media app TikTok. The track went on to win the APRA Silver Scroll Award in 2022 and was included on their debut album Ka Hao: One Tira, One Voice (2022). Rob and Cilla Ruha, and Bishop Don Tamihere have served as mentors of the group.
