Lips began as the indie-pop project of keyboardist Steph Brown, while she was living in New York in 2010. Back home in Auckland, Lips became a duo with multi-instrumentalist Fen Ikner, then a four-piece with Ruby Walsh on bass, Maude Morris on guitar/synth, and everyone on harmonising vocals. Lips created the music for stage show Daffodils, and later the 2019 movie, which was a collection of covers of beloved New Zealand songs. Across various line-ups, Lips have been Silver Scroll award-winners, Taite Award finalists, and opened for band My Chemical Romance (whilst never losing the huge lips mask Steph Brown often wears).
