We patrolled through the villages but they weren’t very cooperative. You never knew the difference whether they were Viet Cong or not. Well at night they were.

I wasn’t old enough but I basically told my parents that with parents’ consent I could go at 19, so they either signed the paper or I forged their signature. So I went and arrived in Vietnam about fifth of May 1967.

They used to spray [Agent Orange] and they told us it was for mosquitoes. And it used to come out and it was like a white oily substance and it was all over you, it was in your hair, in your face, on your lips, and the water we were drinking … everything.
