New Boots and Pants

Television, 1983–1984

New Boots and Pants saw 80s-era pop music given the song and dance treatment. Continuing a Kiwi TV tradition of local performers covering overseas hits, the series showcased a troupe of high-stepping young New Zealanders giving their all on a candy-coloured set. The songs were mostly covers of recent pop and new wave hits (The Police, Devo, Adam Ant, a Blondie medley). Kiwi acts also made guest appearances to perform their own tracks, including Alastair Riddell, band Auckland Walk, Karl Gordon (ex Golden Harvest) and Gayle Welch. The performers included James Cross, who later featured in 2021 documentary James & Isey.
