In reality series Colonial House, the Hutton family continue their experiment living as early settlers would have in 1852. Their journey is just beginning as they leave Lyttleton and face the arduous climb over the Port Hills to Christchurch. In weighty period clothing, they carry the bare essentials by packhorse, with young Emma carrying baby “sack of potatoes” Neil. The modern Bridle Path is easier than the rough bush track settlers faced 150 years earlier, but the heat challenges the sea-sick travellers. Arriving in Christchurch, the exhausted family must figure out how to pitch their heavy canvas tent before nightfall.
