The New Loungehead

Years Active: 1996 — 1999
Award winning and genre-bending group The New Loungehead made their debut in Auckland in 1997.

Overview

The New Loungehead both reflected and helped define central Auckland’s cross-pollination of musical genres in the 1990s. With jazz at their core, the band also embraced soul, hip hop and drum'n'bass. The label Deepgrooves released their debut album Came A Weird Way in 1997, and the next year The New Loungehead won Best Jazz Album at the NZ Music Awards and two bFM Music Awards. While they disbanded in 1999, the band was influential in its own right, and its members would also go on to feature prominently with both their own projects and playing with the likes of Che-Fu, Home Brew and Tami Neilson.
