Ex-Six Volts and Mutton Birds guitarist David Long has composed music for high-profile dramas (The Luminaries, The Insiders Guide to Happiness) and more than 20 documentaries. After helping Don McGlashan on the score for 1993 feature Absent Without Leave, Long went solo for 1997 telefilm Home Movie. Since then he has become one of New Zealand's busiest screen composers, winning NZ Screen Awards for both Insiders Guides, plus a trio of Silver Scrolls  for 3D Everest film Beyond the Edge, racing doco McLaren, and The Luminaries — and an Emmy for music direction and composition, with Stephen Gallagher, for Secrets at Red Rocks. Long is also an award-winning music producer (Fur Patrol, Dave Dobbyn).

“If you say too much, or if you’re too busy, you pull focus away from the images. You don’t want to do that. You want to enhance and push up, but you’re one element.”
