Starting in the 1970s, producer John Barnett brought a host of uniquely local stories to New Zealand and international screens, from Footrot Flats to Whale Rider, Sione's Wedding and beloved bogan dramedy Outrageous Fortune. As boss of production company South Pacific Pictures for roughly two decades, he was a driving force behind some of the country's landmark movies and television dramas.

John Barnett spent almost two decades leading South Pacific Pictures, one of New Zealand's most successful production companies. Barnett was a producer or executive producer on four of the country's ten top grossing films: Footrot Flats, Whale Rider, Sione's Wedding, and Once Were Warriors sequel What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?
