Matt Henley first won notice for his cinematography with the 2008 short film Manslaughter, at the Clermont-Ferrand festival in France. Since then, the NZ Film and Television School graduate has shot everything from feature films to music videos, shorts and commercials. His work on 2018 short film Charmer won a Gold Award from the NZ Cinematographers Society. Henley made his feature debut with dark thriller Coming Home in the Dark (2021), followed by drama Punch and Alice Englert's darkly comic directing debut Bad Behaviour. In 2023 he was named the NZ Cinematographers Society's Cinematographer Of The Year.
I don’t always see cinematography as being a tool to enhance a film, but it is instead baked into the process as being one of a few key disciplines that serve the whole. Matt Henley, in an interview with FilmmakerMagazine, 28 January 2023
