In 2003 Tom Reilly was named New Filmmaker of the Year, thanks to a showreel that included his short claymation film Man with Issues. Reilly's shorts and commercials have often mixed stop motion animation with digital effects, but he has leaned more into live action in recent years. In 2010 he scored festival acclaim with feature documentary Gordonia, which chronicled battles between an eccentric car yard owner and Waitakere City Council. Then Reilly directed a trio of doco shows for Wellington’s Gibson Group. In 2021 he co-directed web series Loko with Diego Opatowski, which follows the redemption story of rapper Matty Paparoa.

“...a well-made, involving and intelligent start to the series. I felt I came out of it knowing more than when I went in, which is a rare and wonderful experience these days.”
