From gang life and hip hop to seven years living in the bush, this documentary tells the story of Matty Paparoa (aka rapper K.D Lok and Loko), and his journey towards recovery. Paparoa entered foster care at six-months-old and, after the death of a family member, later joined a gang. A downward spiral led to addiction and prison, but also to the discovery of a love and talent for rapping. Years later, filmmaker Tom Reilly finds Paparoa living behind his West Auckland cafe, where an unlikely friendship begins. The filmmakers follow Paparoa as he reconnects with his Māori identity, and confronts his past.
