The [HMNZS] Moa actually sunk the submarine, not the [HMNZS] Kiwi. The Kiwi rammed it three times and had to have the Moa take over. The Kiwi had damaged all its bows and that. And we actually had about an hour’s battle with this sub.– Jack Harold
I could see the lifeboat (was) going towards the Moa and I thought well I’m not going to stay in this, so I jumped in the water. I didn’t know it had about a foot of oil on it. And when the ship went down they just fished me out of the water. The Americans were very good; they had a whole lot of chaps there to get hold of us.– Jack Harold
