Set in the sleepy seaside town of Ōmaha in 2006, Big Girls Don't Cry is a queer coming-of-age story that takes place over one monumental summer — at least monumental in the life of 14-year-old Sid (Ani Palmer). The feature debut of writer/director Paloma Schneideman, the credits also include Jane Campion as an executive producer, and actor Noah Taylor (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as Sid's father. Big Girls Don't Cry enjoyed international festival success — including at Sundance and SXSW — before opening the Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival in 2026.
