Fred Hollows - One Man's Vision

1992 46m Television
  • Documentary

This documentary profiles the humanitarian work of surgeon Fred Hollows, as he reflects on his endeavours in the final year of his life. The Kiwi-born, Australian-based eye specialist saved the sight of thousands of underprivileged people in Australia, Eritrea, Nepal and Vietnam thanks to a mixture of boldness and common sense. The "intellectual with the wharfie's manner" became an Australian folk hero and was named 1990's Australian of the Year. Presented by Paul Holmes, the documentary was made by John Harris and Tony Mason, who would work on many shows together at Harris' company Greenstone Pictures.
