Brandon Te Moananui: on The Māori Sidesteps, and filming on the fly

On Brandon Te Moananui’s first day at film school, he was one of the only people to raise their hand to show an interest in cinematography — "everyone else wanted to be a director!" Although the camera is Te Moananui's first love, his career has seen him traverse a variety of roles, across many genres. To name a few — cinematographer of indie feature Hang Time (2019), co-director of documentary series Te Waiora (2020), and co-creator, producer, editor and cinematographer of web comedy The Māori Sidesteps (2016–2021). In this ScreenTalk interview, Te Moananui discusses everything from the social impact of documentaries and his love of anime, to the nitty-gritty details of lens choice...with many stops between.
