Growing up in central Auckland, director Alex Sutherland was a lover of "art, spacies and 80s films". Over 20+ years in the New Zealand screen industry, he has directed countless Kiwi commercials for such brands as Speights and Whittaker's Chocolate, as well as music videos for beloved artists like Hollie Smith, Dimmer, Elemeno P and the brothers Finn. Since around 2014, Sutherland has put more focus on short films, with true story Pelorus, and Loading Docs shorts The Jump and When Nobody is Looking. Sutherland is a co-founder of Auckland production company Thick as Thieves, and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam Arts School.
