As manager of the National Film Unit, David Henry Fowler oversaw the organisation's move from Miramar to Lower Hutt. In 35 years of filmmaking he worked in both government and private sectors: writing, directing, and producing memorable films ranging from commercials to features. After his career at the top was cut short by ill-health, he continued to pass on his knowledge and experience in advisory roles.

Biography

Several boyhood encounters with film crews visiting his home town of Nelson so fascinated David Henry Fowler, he set his sights on a career in filmmaking. In 1954, aged 17, he joined the National Film Unit as a production trainee, and set about learning the craft of editing and writing for film.

“David Fowler was a distinctive fellow. First, there was his elegant attire: even when he was ill, he always looked immaculate.”

David Gascoigne, in an Onfilm obituary, April 1989
