Before he starred as young God Axl Johnson across three seasons of TV3’s The Almighty Johnsons, Emmett Skilton had mainly done small parts on television. Although the Toi Whakaari graduate continues to act (The Making of the Mob, miniseries The Sounds), these days he is often found behind the camera. He worked with his partner Holly Shervey on comical web series Auckward Love and directed multi award-winning Instagram comedy Millennial Jenny; he has also directed more than 70 episodes of Shortland Street. In 2021, Skilton appeared in Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson sitcom Young Rock, as coach Ed Orgeron.

“The first day of filming I had to run out and tell all the brothers I had just killed a girl in Anders' bed. The weird part of this was I was completely naked in this scene and I had only just met the entire cast and crew.”
