Crumble

Second Child , Music Video – 1995

from the album Slinky (1996)

After the critical success of Second Child's debut album Magnet in 1991, and being a support act for Nirvana in Auckland in 1992, the band returned with 'Crumble'. The track sees the Auckland rockers playing their version of grunge with slick riffs and melodic singing. Its music video was directed by Jonathan King, who would later direct videos for the likes of Fur Patrol and Stellar*. Lead singer Damien Binder croons alone, with his band mates in the shadows playing against a raw concrete backdrop of a rundown industrial building. 'Crumble' was released on Second Child's second album Slinky in 1996.

It was definitely becoming a bit more focused with Chris [van de Geer] and I sitting down to write a song then bringing it to the band. Before that, we’d write songs with jams and would spend three months on one song!
– Damien Binder, on how the band's songwriting changed in the lead up to releasing album Slinky, AudioCulture, December 2017
