Give It A Whirl

Television, 2003–2006

Give It A Whirl tells the story of Kiwi rock'n'roll. Over six episodes, the series travelled from 1950s pioneers (including early sensations Johnny Devlin and Dinah Lee) to the eclectic days of the 1990s and beyond. Made by Richard Driver's company Visionary Film & TV, the show mixed music, archive footage and highlights from 70+ interviews. Editor John Fraser was nominated for an NZ Screen Award. A follow-up series from TVNZ took a more thematic approach, including episodes devoted to music videos, Māori musicians and women in rock. Twelve of those interviewed can be viewed on NZ On Screen.
