In 1981 Kiwi David Harvey won Mastermind International in Sydney. The next year producer Max Cryer persuaded the BBC to hold this TV special in New Zealand. The Christchurch Town Hall is packed as finalists from Canada, Australia, NZ, Ireland and the United Kingdom take turns in the famous chair to face two rounds of questions from unflappable quiz master Peter Sinclair. The first round sees impressive mastery of Irish history by Desmond O'Leary, but the general knowledge round proves the decider. Ex champion Harvey is on hand to present the trophy (carved by Hepi Maxwell) to the new mastermind.
No one who gets the gig will ever be as good as Peter Sinclair. He hosted the original Mastermind and he wore the same silver suit year in, year out. It looked as sharp as the first night he wore it on TV. Nothing about Peter ever faded...– Writer Steve Braunias on longtime Mastermind quiz master Peter Sinclair, The Spinoff, 29 July 2015
