With none of the actors being paid, the movie cost $40,000 to make. Mr Harris told the audience a similar movie made in the United States would have cost at least $2 million. The cost difference could have something to do with the fact no one ever said no when asked for help. There were a real fire engine and police patrol car in the movie, both lent by the respective emergency services.

Anthony Mulligan, owner of the Temuka garage where much of the movie was filmed, happily agreed to move out for a week or so. It was all for the good of the town, he reckoned.
