In roving documentary series One Man’s View reporter Hanafi Hayes interviews idiosyncratic New Zealanders living life on their own terms. In this episode, Hayes travels to Gumdigger country in the Far North to meet Carl Nielsen, who lives alone near Spirit's Bay. Nielsen spends his days turning the sandy landscape into paddocks and impresses with a home-cooked stew. Hayes then heads to tiny Hauraki Gulf island Moturekareka to meet Snowy Harris, another self-described ‘Man Alone’, who shows Hayes around his island lookout and talks about the loneliness of isolation. The series won the 1976 Feltex Award for Best Series.
