Director Sam Hamilton described his experimental feature as an "independent inquiry" into 10 celestial bodies found in the Milky Way. The award-winning artist splices together images ranging from psychedelia to physics, to dancer Ioane Papali’i — shot on 16mm film across Aotearoa and Samoa, plus a remote American astrophysics observatory. Hamilton aimed to explore "who — and how — we are in relation to the world/s we inhabit". Newshub's Matthew Hutching praised Apple Pie's debut screening at the 2016 NZ Film Festival: "an absorbing, playful rumination on scientific patterns across our galaxy."
