Angelo Smith is a talented sailor who skippers the vaka Uto ni Yalo, a traditional Polynesian canoe. Championing traditional navigation and sailing techniques, the Uto ni Yalo Trust teaches young people how to make environmentally friendly voyages across the globe, and Smith was a great success story of the programme. In this poetic short documentary, Smith generously shares his life philosophies; from how sailing changed his life for the better, to the joy of managing a crew, to the pain of loss. The film was made as part of the Victoria University film course, and won the 2024 New Zealand Youth Film Festival.
