Before joining Te Vaka and featuring on the massive-selling soundtracks for Moana and Moana 2, Sulata Foa’i-Amiatu’s solo debut as Sulata captured New Zealand’s mid-90s’ affection for downbeat. This soul- and jazz-tinged single on Deepgrooves — for which Sulata won Most Promising Female Vocalist at the NZ Music Awards — is accompanied by a minimalist, desaturated music video directed by label co-founder Kane Massey. 'Never' sees Sulata performing against a plain white backdrop, flanked by a double bass player, drummer and clarinetist, while Anton Kuraia’s rap verse is shot outside Alba cafe on Auckland’s Lorne St — fitting for a song loved by inner city hospitality and student radio.
