In 2002 a catwalk show showcasing young Māori fashion design was held at Auckland Public Library. At the same time, just streets away, industry leaders and media packed the Auckland Town Hall for the high profile L'Oreal Fashion Week. In this report from te reo Maori current affairs show Marae, young Maori designers discuss the joys and the challenges of starting off in the fashion industry. Marae then visits the L'Oréal show, quizzing L'Oréal Fashion Week founder Pieter Stewart about Māori designers. Working hard backstage are siblings and makeup artists Andrea and Nathan Kake.
