This episode of award-winning te reo series Whare Taonga is set in Tāmaki Makaurau. It traces the rebirth of ancestral house Tumutumu Whenua which belongs to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, one of the hapū of the Ngāti Whātua iwi. Kaumātua Hone Taumaunu discusses his iwi's turbulent history, including the traumatic confiscation of the original marae in 1951, and the 1990 fire that destroyed its replacement. The 1977 Bastion Point land occupation slowed iwi plans, but a 'new' Tumutumu Whenua was rebuilt and opened in 2006. Click the 'CC' symbol at the bottom of the screen for an English translation.
