Overview
Recorded for $60, The Clean's debut single 'Tally Ho!' was key in establishing legendary jangly guitar label Flying Nun. The song sailed into the New Zealand Top 20, while EP Boodle Boodle Boodle made the Top 5. The pioneering "indie-godfathers" are cited as formative influences on Pavement — one of a swag of American alternative bands swayed by the southern charms of their fuzzy lo-fi guitar-pop. The Dunedin trio (Kilgour brothers David and Hamish, and Robert Scott, who would front The Bats) recorded five albums, and reunited intermittently. Offshoot band The Great Unwashed produced two. Hamish Kilgour died in December 2022.
