I was introduced as 4th Officer Mackie and Sir Bruce Fraser said: what the hell are you? And I said a 4th Officer. He said: there’s no such thing. I felt alive but he didn’t think so.

Dr Gilmore said: try some of this. And he gave him a white enamel meat dish with half an inch or so of dark green jelly. It tasted foul, it was really bitter. And that was the first penicillin made in Auckland.
