I found that the biggest problem of being an air gunner … it was a very lonely job, as you can imagine, and it was a cold job.

I suppose it was the result of my religious upbringing but I used to say prayers for the people downstairs. It’s funny, isn’t it?

I couldn’t make it because I had a cold and there was a replacement for me on one occasion and they didn’t come back. So I think someone was looking after me. But that’s war.
