In 1982 Aotearoa reached 'peak sheep', with 22 sheep per person. By 2014 the dairy industry had become a mainstay of the Kiwi economy, contributing four percent to the the country's GDP, and earning more than $10 billion in export earnings. But at what cost? This feature-length documentary follows activist/producer Chris Huriwai as he investigates how being the world's most successful milk exporter may be "failing" Aotearoa. Huriwai visits large dairying operations and talks to farmers and environmentalists — including ecologist Mike Joy, outspoken writer Rachel Stewart and legendary British anthropologist Jane Goodall.
I already knew a lot about the dairy industry and its trajectory before working on this project, but Milked helped bring all the pieces together. This experience emphasised the urgency of these issues, but in a way that also provides a pathway for change.– Activist and producer Chris Huriwai on making Milked, in an 11 October 2021 press release
