Te Māngai Pāho Stings

Television – 1994

In New Zealand media, branded 'stings' are displayed at the end of funded content to show that public funds have been invested in that content. Over its 30-year existence, Te Māngai Pāho has commissioned three stings, each reflecting the evolution of the funding environment. The first, Toitū, was produced by long-standing production company Cinco Cine. The second, He Mea Tautoko, was commissioned from director Tearepa Kahi in 2002 to recognise the impending arrival of Māori Television (now Whakaata Māori). Pango produced the third, Ko Te Reo Te Take, in 2022. The animated sting embodies the whakapapa of te reo Māori, and changes in technology and the media landscape.

Te Māngai Pāho sting is a metaphor that represents the children of Ranginui and Papatūānuku and their movement to separate their parents in space, bringing light to existence. This metaphor is also appropriate in regards to the moving of broadcasting to streaming, the move from film and tape to digital. We have arrived.
