The Haka

Short Film (Full Length) – 2021

What do you think they're singing about?
– A soldier wonders what the German songs mean
Sir, we don't play football...we play rugby.
– The Kiwi soldiers want to play rugby
Meri Kirihimete!
– Soldiers shout across no man's land
Just having the opportunity to be put in the shoes of my ancestors, even if it was just for a few days, it was ... something that I'll forever take with me.
– Actor Fredrick Pokai (Hemi) tells TVNZ's Te Karere he is thankful for the opportunity to act in the film
The Haka is a beautiful film on a terrible war which caused millions of deaths. But this film, with humour and sensitivity, gives us faith and hope in humanity. It is a film that we have to share to remember that there were wars, but also that they can be avoided if we share our mutual cultures. I am very happy to be able to share it with the French audience.
– Bernard Bories, President of French festival Cinéma des Antipodes, in a 14 July 2021 press release
