This episode of When the Haka Became Boogie, a documentary series tracing the history of modern Māori music, celebrates a gallery of talented Māori musicians from the 1950s to the 1990s who discuss their craft, their upbringing and their inspirations. Charlie Tumahai and Dilworth Karaka from Herbs recall the glory days of Auckland Māori Community Centre, the 'main marae' where musos put in the hours. Saxophonist Denys Mason (ex The Quincy Conserve) talks technique, and acclaimed guitarists from different eras — Mark Kahi and Tama Renata — trade blues licks in an extended jam.
