Gin Loane began attracting award nominations in 2007 with Fog, one of many short films they have shot that made a mark overseas. By then, Loane had already shot their first feature, dark family tale Christmas. In 2013 they won praise — and a Moa Award — for another family drama, Shopping. Loane went on to win three awards from the NZ Cinematographers Society, two for Mahana (2016), Lee Tamahori's first Kiwi feature since Once Were Warriors, and one a year later for telefeature Jean. Their work also includes Tamahori's The Convert, Rob Sarkies' Consent: The Louise Nicholas Story, and Pike River, alongside 2025 festival hit Mārama.
Biography
In October 2016, Gin Loane won Cinematographer of the Year at the inaugural NZ Cinematographers Society Awards for their work on Mahana, the first feature Lee Tamahori had directed in Aotearoa since Once Were Warriors two decades earlier. Loane worked with Tamahori again on his next feature, The Convert, going on to win the Best Cinematography award at the 2025 New Zealand Screen Awards, and delivering a heartfelt tribute to the late director during their acceptance speech.
