I don't think that I ever approached a landscape from just a sort of total realism. The landscape had to be controlled and restructured, composed into pictorial space.

When we started painting people like our ancestors and using paint and paper or cardboard that sort of shocked people a bit. The other thing was to actually make art forms that belonged inside your own home. That wasn't readily acceptable. Art, particularly māori art, belonged to the marae.
