Once a year, nature enthusiasts from across the globe upload photographs of plants and wildlife found in their urban neighbourhoods. This short documentary follows two teams from Christchurch and Wellington as they take part in the 2024 iNaturalist City Nature Challenge. Ecologist Dr John Sullivan’s passion for conservation drives the Christchurch effort, while in the capital Dr Leon Perrie and Dr Lara Shepherd organise their own team of keen backyard naturalists and citizen scientists. As the deadline looms, rivalry builds — but whatever the outcome, both teams are committed to raising awareness for conservation.
People might think, well, nature's far away, up in the mountains, up in the forests. But actually, it's all around us in the cities.– Dr Lara Shepherd on the public's common misconceptions about nature
