When Aussie larrikin Wayne Gardner went halves on a second-hand dirt bike he kickstarted his motorcycle racing dreams. In 1987 he was crowned 500cc World Champion. Documentary Wayne covers the professional highs and lows of Gardner's racing career, and his relationship with first love Donna-Lee Kahlbetzer, his key supporter through a roller coaster ride of triumph, injury and setbacks. In this trailer Gardner and Kahlbetzer recall the early days of sporting fame. Wayne is produced by Kiwis Matthew Metcalfe and Fraser Brown, whose 2017 film McLaren also involved the high stakes world of motorsports.
Apart from the title, I loved every minute of Jeremy Sims' surprising and entertaining film ... Sims concentrates on the human drama of Gardner's early years, and his relationship with his Wollongong sweetheart Donna Forbes. Gardner is an impish, funny presence on screen — a lot more mellow now than he was then.– Sydney Morning Herald critic Paul Byrnes in a four star review, 18 August 2018
