In this David and Goliath tale, five small-town friends go up against a powerful Auckland business mogul to fight for what they believe in — their local pub. The Tavern is a micro budget, independent film made by a group of friends from Cambridge, where the film was shot over five years. The filmmakers describe the film as a "crude comedy" that promises lots of heavy drinking, disorderly behaviour and dirty jokes. Writer/producer/actor Matt Hicks says "everybody who hates Auckland will enjoy this film." Josh McKenzie (The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell) plays property developer Vick Preston.
