This Te Karere special chronicles events at Waitangi Day in 1984, where there are expressions of both unity and protest. Derek Fox and Whai Ngata are the reporters. They follow a hīkoi protesting the idea of celebrating Waitangi Day, and a train hired by Tainui members to take their people to Waitangi. Topics of protest mentioned include land rights, the Waikato River and the Māori language. A number of leaders appear who have since passed away — including Hepi Te Heuheu (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), Robert Mahuta and Pumi Taituha (both Tainui), Sir James Hēnare (Ngāpuhi), and Kingi Ihaka (Te Aupōuri).
