Dread on a Mission

Upper Hutt Posse , Music Video – 1997

from the single Movement in Demand (1995)

'Dread on a Mission' was written by Matt Hapeta (aka MC Wiya), an original member of Aotearoa's pioneering hip hop crew Upper Hutt Posse. This reggae number draws inspiration from the protest songs of Bob Marley and the Wailers. Right away the Posse lay down a direct challenge to 'Babylon' (the police, court system and government) as the Tino Rangatiratanga flag is unfurled on Parliament grounds. Director Chris Graham films a young 'dread' warrior's road trip from rural Northland to the Beehive, spreading his message of positive Māori resistance along the way.

Babylon stop your murdering, wicked, wicked man we're coming to seize ya...
– Opening lyrics for 'Dread on a Mission'
