Over six episodes, award-winning reality show One Land has families living without power or running water, 1850s style. Two Māori familes arrive by waka at their new home: a purpose-built marae above the Firth of Thames. The larger family speak only te reo. The other identifies as European. Recreating changes that transformed Aotearoa, a Pākehā family arrive for their promised parcel of land. To get through this "social and cultural experiment" without starving, they'll need to trade with their neighbours. Later episodes feature rising tensions, a marriage proposal (episode three) and a sudden showdown (episode four).
...I know already, along with the cured eel and wet crinolines, there is going to be lots of hugging and lots of learning between the Pākehā and Māori families ... who knew the company that brought us Celebrity Treasure Island could be so restrained and scholarly?– Deborah Hill Cone reviews the first episode, The Herald on Sunday, 14 December 2009
