In this full-length feature, relationships between friends and family members are reformed in the aftermath of a car crash that takes the life of the beloved son of a school principal (Rangimoana Taylor). The first semi-improvised low budget feature co-directed by Andrea Bosshard and Shane Loader was shot in and around the Wellington seaside suburb of Island Bay. Hayden (Evan Hussey), the driver of the car, must live with his guilt; but amongst all the pain new relationships bloom, especially for cousin Awhi (Tamati Pere). Oldest son Wiremu is played by Modern Māori Quartet singer Matariki Whatarau (Why Does Love?).
...a happily flawed and ultimately admirable wee movie ... brave, funny, terrifically honest and unaffected, big hearted and smart enough to transcend its non-existent budget. Go see it.– Film critic Graeme Tuckett on Taking the Waewae Express, The Dominion Post, 31 January 2009
Made with financial assistance from the Wellington Performing Arts Centre, Sam Bosshard & Jen Purdie, and Sir Roy McKenzie
