I Am Innocent explores some of the most shocking mistakes made in the New Zealand justice system, of people being found guilty of crimes they didn't commit. On the surface, the six cases featured in season one may seem distinct — schoolgirls in an aggravated assault, careless driving, child abuse, rape, murder and cult ritual — but common themes emerge. Police mistakes, the love of a parent and the devastating emotional impact on those accused are potent throughout, with the subjects often sharing their raw sorrow with the audience. The six 45-minute long episodes of season one can be watched in full above, and check out the episode guide here.
My first court appearance was in Youth [Court] . . . I wanted to look like an adult, but I had pigtails. I had pigtails going to court.– Tania Vini on how young she was when she was accused of aggravated assault, in episode one
