Lawless saw Kevin Smith (Xena Warrior Princess) in one of his biggest ever roles: the undercover cop-turned-private investigator John Lawless. The story takes place over three tele-movies and in this first instalment, John is 18-months deep undercover as a drug dealer. He has friends and foes on both sides of his double life, and when things go awry he is surprised by who will help redeem his name. This polished Kiwi take on American crime shows won good reviews and a stash of awards, including for Joel Tobeck (as a dodgy drug lord), Angela Dotchin (as an aspiring cop), director Chris Martin-Jones and best drama programme.
