From the Album I Believe You are a Star (2001)
Glitzy glamour, ambition and grim reality collide as a shiny-jacketed trotting driver hits the track. Shayne Carter plays both racer and a lone gambler sweating on the outcome, alongside the skittering and scathing title track from his debut album as Dimmer. This first song written by Carter post-Straitjacket Fits (inspired by sharing a Big Day Out bill with Smashing Pumpkins) is moody and unsettling, its caustic lyrics addressing Pumpkins' frontman Billy Corgan. Arranging a race at Auckland's Alexandra Park for the video, Carter fulfilled an ambition he’d had since the age of 10, when the harness racing-obsessed Carter would tie pretend reins to his bunk, and "mime to my favourite record, 20 Years Of New Zealand Trotting Cups."
