Adventures in the snow and the sea feature in this 1964 edition of the National Film Unit’s long-running newsreel series. This instalment features two stories. In Mount Cook National Park, tourists flock to the Hermitage Hotel to revel in the mountain vistas, while mountaineers and cross-country skiers alike carve their paths amidst the rugged terrain. In Auckland, young boys from the Kohimarama Yacht Club are busy building tiny P-class yachts with their fathers. When summer rolls around the harbour comes alive, as the youngsters eagerly launch their hand-crafted vessels out in the water for the first time.
In the heart of the South Island where the Southern Alps, are their most magnificent, is Mount Cook National Park. Visitors have been coming to admire the snowy mountains since the first hotel was built nearly 80 years ago.– Narrator on Mount Cook
